SEED BENEFIT – NOVEMBER 5 – 7PM-10PM

SEED's second annual Tasting and Touring at Sprecher Brewery will be held on Friday, November 5th from 7-10 p.m. The cost is $20 per person (*$10 of which is tax-deductible). This is a very casual event and a great opportunity to mix and mingle with friends and catch up on the school year happenings. Stay for an hour or the entire event--you will have a great time. Your ticket provides two drinks: a variety of beer, soda (or a glass of wine if you must!), light snacks, prize drawings and lots of FUN! See the attached flyer for more information and to rsvp.

SHS STUDENTS RAISING MONEY FOR GUATEMALAN ORPHANAGE THEY VISITED – OCTOBER 24

Groups of SHS students have been have been visiting the Hogar Santa Maria de Guadalupe Orphanage for the past several years. The Hogar, as it is fondly known, is a home for 81 children or orphans coming from families that are too poor to support them or from homes of abuse and neglect.

Our experiences at the Hogar, and love for the orphans, inspired us to create the SHS Student Club “Solidarity Hogares” to raise money for the Hogar. Last year, we raised over $3500 which helped with the base costs of education, food and clothes for the children. This year we are hoping to pay for a generator for the orphanage.

Our major fundraiser this year will be GENERATING HOPE, which will be held on October 24th at Shorewood’s Hubbard Park Lodge. We invite you to this event, which will include a

· banquet dinner

· silent auction

· short presentation about our relationship to the orphanage

· skype conversation with some of the kids (depending on the shaky internet connection at the Hogar)!

Please help us with this worthy cause. You’ll have fun, and you’ll know you are helping 81 orphans in a tangible way. If you cannot attend, please consider making a donation. Friday, 4:45PM Queu up in the SHS parking lot, look for the SHS Alumni Banner, and be in the 5pm Parade! Look for Our Wonderful Carol McWade, Class of '70, who has agreed to be the Alumni Wrangler on Friday and will be holding the SHS Alumni Banner! The parade will start at 5pm.

Route will march up Shorewood Blvd to Prospect, South on Prospect to Menlo, West on Menlo to Morris and ending at SIS, up the drive and to the field!

Come and Show your Alumni Spirit!

Come one, come all to the dedication of a world-famous sculpture by Jaume Plensa on September 21, 2010! From 6pm - 8pm, Plensa will unveil and speak about his sculpture "Spillover II" which will be a permanent work at Atwater Park at the end of Capitol Drive in Shorewood.

An anonymous donor presents Shorewood with this significant piece, which is to be the first of many public art pieces in Shorewood. Plensa is a well-known artist from Barcelona, who also created the Crown Fountain in Chicago's Millennium Park. The Committee that chose the sculpture was given a host of works and this piece, Spillover II, seemed most appropriate for the site and for Shorewood. This soul-searching 8 foot high figure made from stainless steel letters will be graceful but allow for a view of the lake through the piece. It will be mounted on a 2 foot concrete base surrounded by boxwoods, and the sculpture will be lit internally at night. The unveiling should be quite stunning as night falls and the figure begins to glow.

Come out from 6-8PM and Show Your Support - wear your alumni gear or red and grey and help welcome in this significant work of art!

Just a week on the heels of our SHS All Class Reunion came the news that a 15 year old boy named Adam Hernandez faced trial for an in-school theft that happened on March 30, 2010. For some reason, the event escalated to a handcuffed arrest by the in-school police presence (a presence which is not uncommon in schools). As of today, July 19, 2010, at noon, all charges have been dropped.
The issue of in-house police at SHS and the informed follow-through on such cases this is becoming something that will warrant further discussion by the community, the school board, and the police department. For now, please rest assured the charges have been dropped. The Shorewood Police Dept has issued a public statement.

The story was covered in the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel on 7/20 - the rally did happen, and the discussion has now shifted to putting Shorewood on the forefront of the national discussion about police/high school disciplinary lines.

A Very Special Weekend

Dear SHS Alumni Community past, present and future: Shorewood is a special Place.

Volunteers, participants, band members - we are all equally responsible for a wonderful weekend of hugs and welcoming each other back home.

Here's to the little engine that could, for making stone soup turn into a united village, and for so many warm and wonderful feelings towards one another, the school, and the place we all called home at one point.

It is very special to me to be able to make this happen, and I love that people from the Classes of 1933 to 2010 ran into people they haven't seen in years. How could this NOT be an annual event?! Same time next year!

Uh Rah Rah Rah, Shorewood red and grey, you are my home, you are my family, you are the closely knit community that will now help me raise my children. It was a magical and transcendent weekend that overrode all organizational boundaries within the district. Thank you so much for letting me lead. Thank you for trusting me that this wacky huge party idea was going to be a hit, and thank you for everyone who came forward to contribute.

Music and fun, Race at the track at 3, and air conditioning will be available in the Youth Center which is wheelchair accessible. Assistance with parking available; there are designated blue card spaces in the parking lot of the school.

The MOVIE: 7PM
The Shorewood Auditorium, David Zucker introduces Airplane! - recently written up in the New York Times. Suggested $5 donation towards the weekend's events and to celebrate Shorewood!
We will also screen the Class of 2010 (Welcome New Alumni!) All School video featuring every interest group including Ripples, Sports, and more before the show. The production instructions for the making of this video are on display in the Administration building front hall - very intricate! The new District video will be shown after the movie and during the picnic in the administration building.

Welcome Ronnie Eder, new SHS Alumni Association Intern!

The Shorewood High School Alumni Association is proud to announce its first intern for the 2010-2011 School Year, Ms. Veronica Eder! Ronnie, currently a junior at Shorewood High School, is an avid member in the Drama Department. She also plays soccer and is known for her dance skills. Ronnie is the 2010 winner of the Smith Award, awarded to a junior with outstanding academic achievement combined with leadership and concern for others. We are so fortunate for having Ronnie volunteer to help the Alumni Association.

This internship will be a combination of logistics, database work, event planning, reunion coordination, and fundraising efforts of the Association, as well as some aerobic stuffing of packets and envelopes for the All Class Reunion this summer. Ronnie will also be the volunteer coordinator of SHS Students helping out at Alumni Association events.

In addition to these tasks, Ronnie will be on the strategic planning committee to increase Alumni and student collaboration throughout the year, including development of the process to transition graduating seniors to alumni association members.

This summer, Ronnie will be available in June and for the final weeks of August. In July and the beginning of August, Ronnie will be attending a summer drama program at NYU.

$15,000 Raised for Costumer! Message from Barbara Gensler

WOW is all I can say. And the list makes me cry-I am so touched. I remember all of those on the list that I had the good fortune to work with; on stage and back stage. We remember the hundreds of hours that we spent working together, the joy and the pain of long rehearsals where each person worked to his or her capacity and sometimes beyond. We remember opening night, when a Shorewood costumed cast took their places and the house became silent and the "techies" pulled the curtain and turned on the magic and the audience was transported to the world of the production. We knew that we had done our very best and that we could do anything, if we set our goals and worked tirelessly to achieve that goal. But can you imagine doing How to Succeed in Business without a costumer, or doing Hello Dolly without a costumer or Pippin or Joseph or 42nd Street or Barnum or A Chorus Line or Chess or Cabaret or Les Miserables or any other musical that has been done on the Shorewood stage without a costumer.
Since the Shorewood Theater was built, there were no limitations to how big we dreamed and how high we soared and that happened because of the unique tradition of excellence that I fell heir to long ago. I would like to pass that on in tact to the next lucky director so that SHS Drama moves onward and upward.

Dear Drama Alumni, Friends of SHS Drama and Parents,

After 40 years spent in a joyous career, I find myself in the position of having to ask for your help. Up to this time the Shorewood Drama Department has been solvent and successful in its drive for excellence in all aspects of the theater arts. Our shows have continued to wow audiences on stage and back stage. Unfortunately, Shorewood School District is going through tough monetary times and although our academics continue to be strong, our sports achievements high and all of our arts areas excel, there must be budget cuts. The drama department has been cut before, five years ago we lost the full time drama teacher at SIS, seven years ago we lost our make-up advisor, then our 7th hour publicity advisor, and last year, our freshman acting instructor. We are down to two teachers who are part time drama teachers adding up to one full time teacher and a costume aide. We no longer have a feeder system, a makeup or publicity teacher 7th hour. We have managed without them by accepting more and more responsibility. Unfortunately, the cut proposed once again for the 2010-2011 school year will devastate us and neither of us can pick up the slack. It has been proposed that our costume position be eliminated. Last year, this was proposed and by giving up the freshman acting instructor and some donations, we held the position. Now this year, we are asked to give up the costume position as well. By losing the position, we lose the costume inventory that has been cherished for the past fifty years-we still have some WPA built costumes in our collection. Costumes are not a frill. It is an integral part of dramatic arts. We need to try to keep the position and I need your help.

If we can raise enough money to cover this position for one year that may allow us to keep it in the future. The salary is $15,000 and benefits. I am not asking for huge donations from a few people, although that would be wonderful, I am asking that you help us with whatever you can afford. Your donation must be designated for supporting the costumer’s position in order for us to receive the credit. Please help us keep Shorewood Drama in tact. Hopefully this department will continue to train students in the three most important areas of theater.

Greetings Alumni and Friends of Shorewood High School!

I hope this email finds you well, and Happy Earth Day! You may have read that Shorewood Village just voted to stop putting chemicals on its green spaces. The High School already has a green practice, but now knowing that all public lawns are safe for kids and pets (and for sitting on to watch the fireworks) is great news!

I just attended the April, 2010, National Educational Foundation Association conference in Oak Brook, IL, and was pleasantly surprised to find out how ahead of the crowd we are with our Alumni Association. For example, we officially have our own 501c3 Charitable Organization status, so we can guarantee the direction of your donation is the intended one. Yes, you can now choose SHS Alumni Association on your Pick'n'Save card donation, or list it on the Target Visa GivesBack program. Your SHS Alumni Association is based on a genuine desire to connect alumni and friends with each other and the school, is actively utilizing social media to generate new opportunities for communication, and is not just a fund raising operation.

To support reunion organizers, for example, we are working on securing our sales tax exemption certificate to help save money, and we currently are able to offer reunion planners a template for web presence and Facebook, a starting list on Google Docs for working collaboratively with us on your class list, and more! Barbara Gensler, Drama Director, has written an open letter to alumni, parents and friends, calling for support for the Costume Department, which is being cut. We are working on getting this letter distributed to the community in other ways, and you have Barbara's blessing to post it wherever you can. I wanted you to see it first-hand, because she wrote it for you.

Barbara is recovering from breast cancer and this week, from a blood clot which required hospitalization. Any recovery cards for her may also be sent to the School or the SHS Alumni Association, PO Box 11427, Shorewood, WI 53211. - I check the mail and see her at rehearsals twice a week.

By losing the position, we lose the costume inventory that has been cherished for the past fifty years-we still have some WPA built costumes in our collection. Costumes are not a frill. It is an integral part of dramatic arts. We need to try to keep the position and I need your help.

If we can raise enough money to cover this position for one year that may allow us to keep it in the future. The salary is $15,000 and benefits. I am not asking for huge donations from a few people, although that would be wonderful, I am asking that you help us with whatever you can afford. Barbara Gensler wants a Costumer for the Drama Department

Put it this way. I met with Barbara Gensler, THE Barbara Gensler, at City Market today at 10am. She had tea. She looked powerful, and I was suddenly mindful of my posture. Let me say she knows all your names and would recognize you immediately if she ran into you. She made my head spin with all the names and class years and shows and who buys tickets and who of you went on to do what, especially in theater or costumes, after Shorewood.
All she wants, and let me tell you she pays for a lot of things on her OWN, is for the costumer position to be saved. "One more year," she says, "I will stay one more year if I can just keep a costumer. A sewer (meaning Mary Kay Anderson who has been reallocated for 7th period to teach sewing) is different, and we have all these kids after school, we need a costume department. We need a costumer to make this the Shorewood Drama Department that I have given my whole career to run."

If the Alumni were to donate money, tax deductible, she could present a check to the superintendent for $15,000, and in her mind, save Drama at Shorewood.

I think we can do this. There are more things, there is a wish list, a drama endowment in the works, focused fund raising on things like a scrim, a feeder drama teacher, and more, and we'll work on all of it. Right now, we can change Barbara Gensler's life. Her new office has four giant electrical boxes outside the windows that hum and make her feel sick. She is fighting breast cancer. She went to Kenosha and directed a show that was just chosen for a National award and recognition - but she feels guilty and wants to only serve Shorewood.

Right now, at City Market, she is completely clear on this and will make the other things work, but she needs a Costumer. Can you help?

1. You graduated in 1976. What was Shorewood High School like then - what memories of the regular day-to-day life do you have of coming to school here?

I just remember how cool it was to go building to building, between classes, in high school!

What clubs or extracurricular activities were you in at Shorewood?

I was very active in Shorewood Ripples, became the editor middle of senior year. I got elected to student council and I don't know how during senior year.

2. What were some of the unexpected things that you feel maybe influenced you the most?

Everything was unexpected! I was in high school! I guess one thing that was unexpected -- and looking back, knowing other friends' experience of high school, not that common -- was really, how much room there was to move from group to group. I'm not sure I appreciated it at the time; how could I, with no other experience. But in the years following, and certainly at our 20th reunion, it was really remarkable how jocks hung out with drama club kids, who hung out with scholars, who hung out with freaks, who hung out with cheerleaders, etc. When our high school quarterback (and basketball center) Gary Morrison died, way too young, in 2006, it really caused a lot of us to reflect on how Gary was part of the way people moved between groups. In movies and legend, jock stars in his role were at the high school pinnacle and set a tone of putting down everyone else; he was friends with kids in every group, and that helped set a very different tone.

3. Where did you go after leaving this fine school - college, major, college again, next major?

I got a BA in history at UW-Madison, a great experience that built on my Shorewood years (lots of friends went too). Got a job at a paper in SB thanks to Madison graduates, never went back to grad school though I'd planned to (at least, not yet!)

4. How did you come to Salon.com?

Came aboard in '98, three years after founding. But I was the first news editor, so I was part of realizing the Web was going to be about news, more than cultural commentary.

5. Tell me you owe all of your entrepreneurial spirit and wisdom to your high school years at Shorewood.

I really do owe my love of journalism to Michael Huth, the sponsor of Ripples. He sent me out on a story on Title IX, which established funding for women's athletics, when I had no idea what it was. And I still (not often enough) read poetry because of Mr. Huth.

6. Is there anything that you would say you hope is still happening at Shorewood High School?

I would hope there is still the spirit of mixing between groups.

The grade reorganization committee has chosen three grade configurations to recommend to the school board, one of which would close Atwater and two more which would close SIS.

The proposals still have a long way to go before going into action. The committee plans to finalize the language that it will present to superintendent Blane McCann, who will then decide whether or not to submit the three proposals to the school board. Finally, the board will choose to go ahead with one or none of the proposals as they cut $800,000 from the 2010-2011 budget in the coming months.

The first proposal, which is estimated to save $395,986, would make Lake Bluff K-4, make Atwater 5-8, close SIS, and leave SHS unchanged. While the committee liked that this proposal preserved the “middle level experience,” members noted that renovations like implementing hallway lockers, a locker room for PE classes, or even larger bathrooms might be needed in Atwater.

However, “if we’re going to do anything it’s going to be in the minor remodeling mode rather than the major remodeling mode,” said Dean Schultz, interim co-director of instruction and committee facilitator. High remodeling costs could eat up any savings gained from reorganizing.

The second proposal, estimated to save $343,487, would make both Lake Bluff and Atwater K-6 schools, close SIS, and incorporate seventh and eighth graders into the high school. Committee members liked that the two elementaries would remain unchanged and would require no renovations.

However, they were less happy with the idea of having seventh graders and seniors in the same school.

“That scares me as a parent,” said Jay Sorenson, who has a child at Lake Bluff.

Furthermore, the logistics of fitting so many kids in SHS would be tricky. Although SHS principal Matt Joynt said that SHS was originally designed for grades 7-12, he joked that there might have to be “kids on the roof” with this proposal. Teachers would likely be unable to have prep periods in their classrooms, as almost every room would be used almost every hour of the day.

The committee also debated whether or not the seventh and eighth graders would be kept separate from the rest of the high school. That decision, along with the finer points of any reorganization, would likely be ironed out by another committee after the school board makes their choice.

“If you give [seventh and eighth graders] a full high school experience, it would be a lot easier and a lot cheaper,” Joynt said. He also pointed out that “this campus was built for student travel between buildings, not to lock off two floors and not travel between classrooms.”

On the other hand, seventh and eighth graders could be given what Joynt called a “hybrid standard,” where they would still take electives like orchestra and art in the normal high school facilities but otherwise have a more middle-school like experience with, for example, no open lunch.

The third proposal would make Lake Bluff K-4, close Atwater, make SIS 5-7, and put 8^th graders into the high school. The committee liked that this proposal would keep middle level students at SIS, “a building designed for middle schoolers,” as Sorenson said, and would thus result in less remodeling costs than the first proposal. Furthermore, with a savings of $534,881, this proposal is the most economical of the three.

Like the second proposal, however, the committee had concerns over whether eighth graders would be treated as full high school students or kept separate.

It was clear that the school board will be faced with a tough decision that could impact the April 6 elections, when board member John Carlton will face three challengers for his seat and one open seat. Sorenson pointed out that all of the current school board members’ children go to or did go to Atwater, and this could affect the board’s decision.

Debate at the meeting at times became heated as committee members struggled with finding a balance between community desires and financial realities while also encountering different priorities.

“800 grand is a lot to lose this year and next year and the year after that… after a while, it doesn’t matter where you went to kindergarten,” said Shorewood parent Rod Washington.

The committee was aware that the closure of any school, especially Atwater, would not be welcomed by the community.

“Every single scenario is going to [anger] somebody,” said Mary Gorman, Lake Bluff science aide and Shorewood parent. “There are going to be 50 people behind every opinion once we bring this to the board.”

“If anyone thinks that they’re going to get out of this without any pain,” Sorenson added, “leave the room now.”

This could be a great fundraiser to support Shorewood in all ways - PTO, Girl Scouts, you name it!

Pizza Man

A popular restaurant for Shorewood alums, last known on January 19^th as the Pizza Man restaurant, located on the corner of Oakland and North Avenue in Milwaukee, burned in a four-alarm fire. The blaze completely gutted Pizza Man and the rest of the building, which also included a nightclub, two other restaurants, and ten apartments on the building’s second floor.

Luckily, all of the apartment’s residents were evacuated, and no one was hurt. The building, however, has already been torn down.

Although it stood outside the Village of Shorewood, its nearly 40-year run since opening in 1970 made a huge impression on Shorewood students and alums. After soliciting for Pizza Man memories on Facebook, I learned that it was a popular hangout for Shorewood seniors in the 1970s to enjoy pizza and pitchers – since the drinking age was 18, after all. In later years, it played host to many pre-homecoming dinners, post-musical rehearsal snacks, and philanthropic events too, including a yearly benefit for Camp Heartland organized by Shorewood students in the 1990s.

Investigators believe the fire to be arson, but as the building was completely destroyed, may never know the exact cause. However, they do believe the fire started in the Black and White Café, located at the far eastern storefront in the building.

Fans of the restaurant were able to get a piece of Pizza Man before demolition – literally – as de-construction crews allowed former patrons to take bricks from the building as crews helped to tear it down. For now, those will remain as the only memories of the fallen restaurant, but the restaurant’s owners say they’ll be back creating more Pizza Man memories soon. Mike and Deanna Amidzich, who owned Pizza Man since 1970, have said they plan to re-open, likely on a new site. Although they haven’t confirmed one yet, speculation continues to grow on where they will re-open.

Steve Berg Class of '84 Volleyball Memorial

Greetings, SHS Alumni. The entire family of Steve Berg, Class of '84, and the Shorewood High School Alumni Association would like to announce a memorial collection for Volleyball Equipment at Shorewood High School. The goal is $5,000, and donations will go towards a new and much-needed set of volleyball standards, nets, and balls for the school.

Your donation will help the Volleyball Program - which as many of you know was something Steve enjoyed while at Shorewood.
